There are numerous reports in regards to the fact that Mike Tannebaum, the former general manager for the New York Jets and current consultant for the Miami Dolphins, will be taking over the front office for the Dolphins. Zach Krantz of WQAM first reported the news on Tuesday afternoon and then was confirmed by Alex Marvez and Mike Garafolo.
Tannebaum was hired by the Jets in 1997 as the Director of Player Contract Negotiations.Over the years, Tannenbaum served in numerous administrative positions with the team including Senior Vice President of Football Operations and Assistant General Manager. He was promoted to general manager in 2006 but was fired after the 2012 season when the Jets went 6-10. During his tenure as general manager, the Jets had an overall record of 61-58, reached the playoffs three times, and reached the AFC Championship game in back-to-back seasons in 2009 and 2010.
Besides currently working as a consultant for the Dolphins, Tannebaum oversees the contract negotiation and representation of football and basketball coaches for both professional and collegiate sports, as well as Priority Sport's broadcasting operations. Tannenbaum has personally been a part of three NFL Head Coach searches and interview processes, and hired over 100 assistant coaches in his career.
While nothing has been officially confirmed by the Dolphins as of now, Tannebaum is expected to begin on February 1. His official job title, according to Pro Football Talk, will be Executive Vice President of Football Operations. General Manager Dennis Hickey will report to him. According to Adam Beasley of the Miami Herald, Joe Philbin will not and will still report to owner Stephen Ross. No changes to Philbin and Hickey's job status are expected this season.
It's no secret that owner Stephen Ross has struggled with football decisions. This is a move that will allow someone else who has been around the business to make the appropriate decisions for the franchise on a daily basis.
More information will be coming as it becomes available.
