The Miami Dolphins announced that defensive lineman Derrick Shelby has been suspended indefinitely for conduct detrimental to the team. In a statement released by the team, Joe Philbin said he was disappointed to hear about Shelby's arrest.
“We were disappointed to learn about Derrick’s arrest. Everyone in this organization is held to high standards of conduct and professionalism. Based on my conversations with Derrick and the information we have thus far, Derrick will be placed on Indefinite Club Suspension. When we have completed all of the necessary diligence, we will make a final determination on his discipline.”
Shelby was arrested over the weekend after he was accused of touching women without their permission at a Fort Lauderdale night club. According to the Sun-Sentinel via the police report, security workers told a Fort Lauderdale police officer working a security detail that Shelby "was causing a disturbance" at the club early Saturday.
Ater being told several times to leave CYN nightclub at 111 Southwest 2nd Avenue, Shelby refused, began blocking the exit and said, "What are you going to do," the report said. According to the document, Shelby appeared intoxicated and began photographing and taping the police officer, who then requested backup assistance. When other officers arrived, Shelby refused to be taken into custody and continued to struggle.
Officers used a stun gun on Shelby three times before taking him into custody, according to the report. After being evaluated and then medically cleared at Broward General Medical Center, he was arrested on charges of tresspassing and resisting arrest without violence. He was released from jail shortly before 10:30 a.m. Saturday after posting a $100 bond.
"Derrick maintains his innocence," said Daniel Rosenberg, Shelby's Fort Lauderdale-based attorney. "There's a lot of conflicting information about his arrest. He's going to plea[d] not guilty."
No further information has been released at this time but by the wording of the statement and the way the report describes the situation, it doesn't sound like a good situation for Shelby.
