One can be consistently good or consistently bad at something and the Dolphins have been a little bit of both throughout this season so far. However, over the last six quarters, they’ve played at a high level and will look to continue this against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday.
If you want to be an optimist, you can look at the last three games and can say we played pretty well against Oakland, we played a very competitive game against what appears to be a very good Green Bay team that is 5-2, and then we played relatively good yesterday,” Joe Philbin said. “There are signs we are getting better as a football team. I told the staff in our meeting, one thing that is encouraging to me is I think we are practicing a little better. We are not spending a lot of extra time on the field. We are not repeating a ton of plays, so we are getting our work done and getting off the field. I think that’s a positive that obviously has to continue as we move forward.”
On the defensive side of the ball, Kevin Coyle has been doing a good job overall but has had some lapses with play calling and also with the players’ execution on the field. That’s why he’s looking to get more consistency out of his unit as well.
“I think there are certainly plays in every game that we look back and wish we could have done better, including yesterday’s game in which we had a solid overall performance. I think if you look at a number of the defensive categories you’re judged by, we’re either where we want to be or moving towards where we want to be in that sense. But yet we’re never satisfied. I think we need to play our best game of the season this week and keep on building. Every week is a different challenge and I think our players realize that.”
“I was real proud of the fact that this was a great character win for the entire team. The players really responded. It was tough all week coming off the loss that we that we had, but yet there was great focus in practice, there was great attention to detail and we came in there with a mindset that we were going to find a way to win the game in Chicago. It’s a great credit to the players and their mental toughness and their preparation.”
