We’ve heard all the rumblings about Ryan Tannehill this week and Tannehill spoke out on his perceived struggles yesterday, which we talked about here. However, some have also said that he is struggling with his accuracy and ball placement, which is absolutely true. He has left a few touchdowns on the field so far this season with his inaccurate throws and has missed plenty of other big opportunities. His confidence has also been criticized and some have said that he is lacking it this year. If you asked him though, he would tell you he isn't.
“I feel good. I want it to change. I’m not sitting here happy with how I’m playing, but I go out and I think I play confidently, I step in the huddle with confidence," Tannehill said. "That’s the job of a quarterback, to go out there and be confident with the communication of the play, in the huddle and with my play. You can’t go out there and play scared. If you play scared, your decision making slows down and that’s when you run into more trouble.”
Joe Philbin said that they would work with Tannehill throughout the week on improving his accuracy and hopes that it will get corrected sooner rather than later. How exactly would they do that? Philbin went into detail about it.
“I think a lot of things. We talk about it as an offensive staff, one of the things we did today, a subtle thing, is the route timing periods we have, it doesn’t look like much against air, are very very important periods where we make sure and we have the time, detail, the exact depth, the exact spacing horizontally on the field, whether we want the ball at the waist, the chin, above the helmet. So we’ve been spending a little bit more time on that this week just emphasizing both. It’s not just the accuracy of the quarterback. It’s the detail and the precision of the wide receivers that make it all go in the passing game.”
Tannehill has been unfairly criticized over time for issues that aren't his fault. However, his accuracy and ball placement issues are definitely a concern and let's hope he can begin to correct them against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.
