The Miami Dolphins currently are one of the best teams in the NFL when it comes to not being penalized often and Joe Philbin prides himself on that as it means his team is disciplined and understands how to play the game. In addition, there are other areas that Philbin is impressed with but as always, he sees room for improvement.
“I want to say we’re fourth or fifth in the league [least amount of penalites] maybe somewhere around there. Historically, that’s something that we’ve done relatively well. It’s important. Defensively, you don’t want to give anything free to your opponent. Coverage units, you don’t want (penalties) on special teams, it’s exactly the same. I think we had zero penalties at halftime last week if I’m not mistaken and we ended up with five, so it obviously was not good in the second half. I think overall our guys have done a good job and it’s going to be important to continue that.”
“I like the way our guys play the game. I really do. I said that in preseason and I still feel that way. I like the vibe of the team when I’m there. It’s a competitive group of guys. Certainly, there’s a lot of things to work on. I think I said yesterday, the biggest thing that I’m looking for is consistency overall. Today, we’ll talk in general with the staff more about some of the nuts and bolts of football, and specifics schematically and situationally. But really, it’s more consistency for me.”
Being consistent is one of the themes that has been preached by the Dolphins coaching staff and players dating back to the preseason. We haven’t seen much of it so far during the season but hopefully after a big win against the Oakland Raiders, the Dolphins will find their identity and continue to run with it for the remainder of the season.
