Even though the Dolphins scored three points with their first-team offense on the field, there were still several things that stood out as a marked improvement from the previous two games. They ran the ball better, they blocked better and they continued to improve as a unit. On the downside, Ryan Tannehill made a few bad decisions and there were several turnovers and/or penalties that killed a few offensive drives. For his part, Tannehill knows that they need to score when they get into the red zone. While they didn't get that done tonight with the first-team offense, there is still plenty of hope.
“I thought we moved the ball but we didn’t score points and that’s what we’re out there to do. We had the fumble on the long drive and threw the interception in the red zone. You can’t have that. You can’t be careless with the ball and turn it over. We had our chances,” Tannehill said. “I thought we ran the ball effectively. It was good to see Knowshon (Moreno) out there running hard. I thought Lamar (Miller) did a nice job as well and Damien (Williams) in there with the next group so pleased with the running game, I don’t know what we finished with, our totals, but we ran the ball well and got that going so I was happy to see that. We’ve got to finish drives. We’ve got to be able to keep going and put touchdowns on the board.”
Interesting enough, Joe Philbin thought that Tannehill had a pretty good game.
“I thought he played well overall. Obviously, I’m sure he would say the same thing when you’re down that close, I think they played cover 2 on that interception, that’s something you never want to turn the ball over in scoring position. You never want to turn the ball over, period. But when you’re about to get points on the board that’s a critical part of the field.
“I thought he managed the game well, I thought he was seeing things well, I thought he had good command of what he was doing. I think Mike (Wallace), supposedly, the lights and the location, just didn’t quite hook up.”
I believe that the offense was keeping it vanilla most of the night while focusing a lot on the run game. I have a feeling that this will not be the offense you see come the first week of the regular season.
