After Dannell Ellerbe was placed on injured reserve, the Dolphins signed Kelvin Sheppard, who has previously played for the Indianapolis Colts and Buffalo Bills. Now, both the coaching staff and Sheppard are doing everything they can to get him up to speed as quickly as possible so he can contribute right away. However, expectations must be kept to a reasonable level.
"I'm not going to kid myself into thinking I can learn the whole defense in a week," Sheppard said to the Sun-Sentinel. "I'm going to break it down by concepts and learn the concepts of the defense."
Joe Philbin said though that it’s very possible Sheppard is used in the game-plan on Sunday in various packages and said that he needs to keep on working hard to learn as much as he can.
“Sheppard is going to have to learn pretty quick. We are on an accelerated program," Philbin said. "We'll see how quickly he can absorb it, but he seems like a pretty intelligent guy so far."
