You may never see an onside kick again in the NFL like the one you saw on Sunday when Caleb Sturgis kicked the ball with his opposite foot in the other direction from which he was running. It failed miserably as it jumped right into the hands of one of the Broncos players.
However, Joe Philbin said that this had been something they've been working on in practice for the past two years and thought they would have success with it in the game.
“It’s just one of the things, we’ve been practicing that type of kick for a year-and-a-half, two years. We have to execute better. They obviously recovered it. At some point, we just didn’t make enough plays in the game. At some point, that was the kind of game we were in. We have a three-point game. We have to get the onside kick. We had a timeout left I believe. There was a minute-and-30 some odd seconds. We didn’t make enough plays in the second half to win the game. That was the frustrating part about it.”
It was an interesting call in a desperate situation. We'll see if the Dolphins try to pull that off again down the road if they are forced to attempt an onside kick again.
