The Miami Dolphins had to beat the Baltimore Ravens to have the inside track to the playoffs and to remain in control of their destiny. Instead, they came out flat and lost to a better and more physical team on Sunday and now, they are on the outside looking in. They’ll need to win out and also get lots of help if they want to make the playoffs but their chances are slowly fading away.
Following the game, the players and coaches talked about how disappointing the loss was but also said that they need to move on and focus on the New England Patriots.
“We’ve got to go on a plane and play a very good New England team that is an excellent football team,” Joe Philbin said. “That’s really all that I’m concerned about at this point. I’m sure there’s a million scenarios and I really don’t have time to consider. I’m probably not smart enough to figure out all of them. The best way is to win games. Certainly this one didn’t turn out that way. We have one next week and we need to start getting ready for that.”
After the game, players talked about how disappointing the loss was, especially because they knew the situation they were in. Jelani Jenkins said that it was disappointing to have the lead and have the upper game in the early part of the game, only to fall apart in the second half. Jared Odrick, who had an outburst with Joe Philbin on the sidelines, said the mentality of the team hasn’t changed and their goal is to still make the playoffs by winning out.
Ryan Tannehill said that the Dolphins didn’t play well enough to win and weren’t consistent enough on the offensive side of the ball.
“Yes, we understood what it was coming in. [It was an] opportunity [that] we let slip [away]. You never know what can happen. Obviously other things have to happen and it is out of our hands to some extent. We still have to keep fighting. This team is full of fighters. We’ll find a way to respond and come back and do the best that we can the rest of the year. Whatever happens, happens. I don’t think the door is completely shut at this point and we can still control how we play in our next game.”
Cameron Wake, who has never made the playoffs in his pro career, said that the Dolphins need to move on and prepare for the Patriots, who they will play on Sunday.
"Well, the same way that I fight the temptation when we beat a team that it made our season. We don't, at least I don't, and I think I can speak for most of the people in the locker room that you don't concern yourself with a lot of the other things going on, you have to focus on your job and what you can control. I have no idea what is going on outside of here or what the situation is, but I know we have to fix the things that we didn't do well today and we have another big game coming up in seven days from now."
