Despite the NFL season starting two weeks ago, it has been in the news for all of the wrong reasons. First, it started with Ray Rice, then moved onto Ray McDonald, then to Adrian Peterson and now to Jonathan Dwyer. It’s really a sad state of affairs and the NFL is spinning its wheels but seems to be going absolutely nowhere in the view of the public eye.
Last year, the Miami Dolphins were the center of the NFL and the national media during the bullying scandal. At the time, the immediate suspension of Richie Incognito for four games seemed a little much, but looking back at it now, the Dolphins made the right move. A year before that, they cut Chad Johnson within 24 hours of him being arrested for domestic violence. Because of their experience with the national spotlight and such, Joe Philbin and Ryan Tannehill were asked about their views on the current situation and how it compares to their own locker room now in 2014.
“I think we have an outstanding locker room of high-character individuals,” said Philbin. “We talk to our guys all the time about treating people with respect, one another, people they come in contact with when they go inside the building, outside of the building. We are certainly not perfect by any means, but we are just looking for good, honest decent people and we’re lucky we have an excellent group. This is their profession. This is what they do for a living. The way I view it is they are utilizing their potential to the fullest when they go out the play football, their athletic ability, their talent, their competitiveness. I don’t think of it as violence necessarily.”
Tannehill defended the vast majority of players in the NFL and said that it’s hard to make a general statement about all of them based on a few players.
“I’ll say to those people that they don’t know. You can’t make a generalization off of a couple of people for a large group of hundreds of guys. You can make that generalization about a bunch of different groups of people and that’s not right either. You just have to get to know the guys in general. You can’t make a broad statement encompassing everyone.”
The Dolphins have focused on getting players who are of high character over the past several years. This year’s team seems like a good group of guys and let’s hope that it continues that way for the remainder of the season.
