After the Dolphins huge win against the New England Patriots the first week of the season, the players and fans were on a huge high. After all, they won the season opener at home against a bitter division rival and one of the toughest teams in the league. However, that came crashing back to earth hard on Sunday when they were demoralized and beaten bad by the Buffalo Bills.
For many of the veterans, this is something they are used to as they understand how the NFL works and understand that you can lose any given Sunday to any team in the league, even if they aren’t as good as people think they are. For the younger players though, this is new territory but fortunately, they have some veterans on the team to look towards for advice.
“I’m sure that they’ve weathered storms before in terms of college football. Every team that you’ve played on, you’ve gone through adversity. So at some point, I’m sure you’ve had to deal with adversity before. Is it different in the NFL? Sure. The stakes are higher,” Jared Odrick said. “It’s just a matter of staying focused on things that you can control when stuff hits the fan. It’s really a matter of, I guess, monitoring your expectations number one and then also just really being able to control what you can control because there are a lot of things that you want to be able to change, but you’re not capable of doing it. So work on the things that you can control and do your part.”
Olivier Vernon is also one of the players who speaks up to younger players in an effort to help them get adjusted to the NFL and how the games are played each week.
“Coming in, they don’t realize how close these games are as far as the margin of victory. The room for error is just so minimal, you can’t make any mistakes out there. They will capitalize on one little thing that you do and that will determine the outcome of the game. But they’re learning. They know how hard it is to win. They’re going to realize as the season keeps going on, it’s hard to get a win out here. Just as you see, all of these talented guys on this team, the other team has talented players too. So it’s pretty much even keel on both sides of the ball when you look on paper, so it’s about executing.”
The Dolphins have a lot of young players from a lot of different small schools so their learning curve is even higher. With a good veteran presence though, they should be able to pick up on things pretty quickly and begin contributing more and more to the team as the season goes on.
