Miami Dolphins announce practice squad; Matt Hazel makes it on

The Miami Dolphins released the list of players signed onto the practice squad, and Matt Hazel's name is on it much to the relief of many Dolphins fans.

Hazel has shown that he has a lot of talent but he's on a team that is completely stacked at the wide receiver position. However, the Dolphins saw something in Hazel and it was enough to give him a place on the practice squad after he cleared waivers.

Hazel was on the receiving end of a brutal hit in the endzone that sidelined him against the Dallas Cowboys, and then a week later he caught a screen pass from quarterback and fellow practice squad player Seth Lobato that resulted in a touchdown.

Hazel has a lot of talent, that much is obvious, but he'll have to work hard to earn a roster spot on a team whose strength is at his position.

Also on the practice squad are guard Sam Brenner, offensive tackle Tony Hills, linebacker David Hinds, quarterback Seth Lobato, tight end Jacob Maxwell, defensive end D'Aundre Reed, defensive tackle Garrison Smith, wide receiver Tommy Streeter, and cornerback Lowell Rose.

According to Aaron Wilson of the National Football Post, offensive lineman Sam Brenner is back with the Dolphins as a member of the practice squad. Brenner has been with the Dolphins since 2013 and is primarily a center. Some had thought he would be the starting center when the season opened in place of Mike Pouncey but the Dolphins signed Samson Satele instead.

Tight End Jacob Maxwell will be signing with the Miami Dolphins to be on their practice squad, according to Aaron Wilson of the National Football Post. Maxwell had worked out with the Dolphins yesterday after being released by the Detroit Lions. He was undrafted out of Louisiana-Lafayette. There, he played in 35 games and had 36 receptions for 377 yards and six touchdowns.

In a press conference today, general manager Dennis Hickey announced that the Dolphins have released safety Don Jones and wide receiver Damian Williams. This comes after the team claimed cornerback Sammy Seamster and safety Brandian Ross.

Seamster was signed by the Ravens as a rookie free agent back out of Middle Tennessee State back in May. In college, he appeared in 44 career games and recorded 69 tackles and 1 interception. Seamster has also played safety in his career and was likely claimed by the Dolphins due to his versatility. Ross was signed by the Green Bay Packers as an undrafted free agent in 2011. He played at Youngstown State University as safety and switched to cornerback his senior year. He spent 2011 on the Packers' practice squad and then again in 2012 until the Oakland Raiders signed him to the active roster in September of that year.

According to Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald, the Dolphins have signed wide receiver Tommy Streeter to their practice squad. Streeter was one of the top prospects coming into the 2012 NFL Draft but for various reasons, slid to the sixth round.

He was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens but in August of that year, he was placed on injured reserve. A year later, he was released. On September 1, 2013, he signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a member of their practice squad. They released him several days ago.

According to Aaron Wilson of the National Football Post, the Miami Dolphins have claimed cornerback Sammy Seamster. Since he was claimed off waivers, he will be on the active roster and will fill one of the 53 spots on the team. Because of this, the Dolphins will have to release a player, which will likely be either Don Jones or Michael Thomas.

Seamster was signed by the Ravens as a rookie free agent back out of Middle Tennessee State back in May. In college, he appeared in 44 career games and recorded 69 tackles and 1 interception. Teams around the NFL are allowed to start signing players today to their practice squad beginning at 12:01 PM EST. The Miami Dolphins wasted no time in getting that start as they have signed quarterback Seth Lobato, according to Andrew Abramson and Omar Kelly of the Palm Beach Post and Sun-Sentinel, respectively.

Lobato was the third string quarterback throughout the preseason and the Dolphins like what they see in him in terms of development. Although he was shaky at times during preseason action, he did start to show signs of improvement in the game against the St. Louis Rams.

The Dolphins would ideally like to see Lobato develop enough to take over the number two position next year when Matt Moore's contract is up but right now, it's anyone's guess as to whether or not Lobato will continue to improve or not.

Dolphins hold a Football Fiesta at Dolphin Mall

In the Miami Dade County area, there are many Hispanics who enjoy sports, but from my experience they're usually only relegated to baseball and what they call "Fútbol" which is known to non-Hispanics as soccer.

However, last night the Miami Dolphins organization made an effort to change that, holding their third annual "Football Fiesta" at Dolphin Mall to try and interact with their Hispanic fan base.

There were many Hispanics at the event, all enjoying the fun and taking pictures with the Dolphins cheerleaders and players who were brought in to the event, and the organization is really happy about being able to put it all together.

"You know we're really, really excited about it, there's a team of people that make it happen in the organization." said Senior Vice President-Chief Marketing officer Claudia Lezcano, "Sergio and I kind of had this idea about three years ago and now we're three years in, and really it's across all of our departments to make sure this is something fun for our fans; especially for the Hispanic fans in Dade County."

Claudia was inspired to start this event three years ago after noticing how few Hispanics are actually into American Football, and she's also Hispanic herself.

"Well I was born and raised here in Miami, I'm Hispanic; my mom's Mexican and my dad's Cuban, I grew up with the Dolphins 'cause I was born here." she said. "But there are a lot of Hispanic fans here in South Florida that grew up with Soccer from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela, so we really saw an opportunity to connect with all of our fans, including the Hispanic fans that might love soccer right now but we also want them to love American football. So the Football Fiesta is a way to connect with newer Hispanic fans but also all of our fans here at the event."

The players who were there also enjoyed seeing all the Hispanic fans coming out to see them, especially since Hispanics are usually more into soccer or baseball.

"You know it's definitely great to come and see that transformation," said rookie wide receiver Jarvis Landry, "it's definitely great to see the Hispanic fans kinda buy into these American sports and support this Miami team and support the Dolphins and come out and get the autographs and have their pictures taken with us."

Landry also stated how happy he was to be a part of this event that saw so many Hispanics coming out to learn about American Football.

"I think it's a great event, it's a great event. It gives the fans opportunities to interact with the players hands-on. I'm happy and I'm honored and I'm excited to be a part of this."

Will Davis was there as well, and he was seen with a huge smile on his face as he interacted with all the fans who brought their children as well as themselves.

"Yeah, it was fun you know? It's a good experience and yeah I had a blast, it's fun seeing people, seeing their smiles, seeing them happy." Davis said, "I mean it was fun, know what I'm saying? Just coming here, it was my first time at Dolphin Mall and at the same time seeing the excitement in the fans." "You know next Sunday is the week one home opener, you know, makes you excited, just like 'been waiting for it' and it's almost here, it's football season and you can feel the spirit and all that stuff."

Between dancing cheerleaders, football players signing autographs and game shows where new fans can learn about football and do their best touchdown dance on stage, the Miami Dolphins have done a great job reaching out to their Hispanic fan base, and it will surely help fill the stadium as more and more people in South Florida get educated on just how much fun American football is.

Mike Pouncey will not start season on PUP list

According to reports, Dolphins Pro Bowl center Mike Pouncey will get to start the season on the 53-man roster as opposed to the PUP list.

Speculation was abound on social media regarding whether or not Pouncey would miss the first four or six weeks of the season depending on where he wound up, and now with the cut of tight end Evan Wilson, Pouncey has a spot on the roster and the reports are going out that he'll get to take it.

Pouncey had hip surgery on June 23, 2014 but he'd been absolutely dominating his rehab assignments all throughout training camp, showing that he had every intention of coming back stronger than ever. Once Pouncey returns, both the run blocking and pass protection stands to receive a major upgrade, further bolstering the team's chances at making the playoffs for the first time since 2008.

Evan Wilson cut as the Dolphins reach 53 on roster

Per Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, the Miami Dolphins have made their final necessary roster cut: undrafted free agent tight end Evan Wilson.

Wilson came out of Illinois and was brought into training camp to see if he could offer something new to the Dolphins offense, but he was ultimately unimpressive and is now the final player to be cut in the name of necessary roster purging.

Does this mean the Dolphins are finished? It's a possibility, but there are a lot of players out there on the waiver wire that the Dolphins may decide they want to get their hands on, and that will require more players to leave. As of now though, the team is no longer required to remove anyone else.

Per Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, defensive end D'Aundre Reed has been informed that he will not be making the 53-man roster.

Reed, a former seventh-round draft pick of the Minnesota Vikings has bounced around the league ever since he got into the NFL, having been signed (then released) by the San Francisco 49ers and the Jacksonville Jaguars before making a brief appearance for the Arena Football League team, the Los Angeles KISS.

Reed was battling for a spot on a roster filled with talented defensive linemen, he just couldn't find a way to do enough to get a spot.

The Dolphins have only a couple of roster moves left to make, we'll see what those moves entail soon.

Per Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, defensive tackle Isaako Aaitui has been informed that he will be released by the Miami Dolphins.

Aaitui was originally an undrafted free agent signed by the Miami Dolphins back in 2011, and he has suffered a lot of bad luck so far in his career. Now in both stints with the Dolphins, Aaitui failed to make the team and has been cut during the final purging of the rosters before the regular season.

Could the Dolphins bring him back sometime? It's a possibility, Aaitui has shown he can play, just not at the same level as his fellow tackles, such as Anthony Johnson. Aaitui can pla

Per Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, the Miami Dolphins have informed undrafted free agent Harold Hoskins that he has made the 53-man roster.

The man affectionately known as Gator came onto the scene and immediately began flashing signs of being an almost carbon copy of the team's own Charles Clay, and despite being sidelined by an injury for a small portion of training camp, Hoskins' ability and effort in his preseason games was enough to convince the coaches that Hoskins was worthy of a spot.

It's possible they may simply trying to hold onto Hoskins until they feel they can safely place him on the practice squad, but given his performance that scenario seems unlikely.

Per Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, kicker Jake Rogers, offensive tackle Tony Hills and guard Evan Finkenberg have all been released by the Dolphins.

Hills is a six-year veteran tackle who did ok but was ultimately outplayed by fellow veteran tackle Jason Fox. Finkenberg was coming along well in training camp but the Dolphins seem to prefer versatility, however Finkenberg might catch on as a practice squad candidate.

Kicker Jake Rogers was brought in after John Potter injured his hip against the Dallas Cowboys and was mainly only meant to hold down the fort until Caleb Sturgis became healthy. It's apparent that the Dolphins trust Sturgis and are in no hurry to replace him.

Another somewhat surprising cut has been made, according to a source, guard Sam Brenner has been informed that he will be released by the Miami Dolphins.

Brenner was able to produce decent backup play during last season's offensive line debacle and he was expected to be able to make a case for himself as a backup center, but snapping issues brought that experiment to a quick end as the Dolphins decided to sign veteran center Samson Satele.

Brenner is still eligible for the practice squad and may find himself being placed there as he does have talent that can be worked with.

The Miami Dolphins have informed defensive tackle Anthony Johnson that he will make the 53-man roster while also telling Tevin Mims and Garrison Smith that they will be released.

Johnson has shown an incredible amount of skill as an undrafted free agent and is very deserving of his spot. His cause was helped by A.J. Francis being placed on the injured reserve list.

Defensive end Tevin Mims and defensive tackle Garrison Smith both were fighting for roster spots, Smith in particular did very well against the St. Louis Rams, but the Dolphins felt neither of them warranted a spot on the final 53. Smith may however find himself on the practice squad as he showed a lot of grit and determination, especially in the final preseason game.

Per Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, running back Orleans Darkwa has been informed that he will be making the 53-man roster. This comes as a bit of a shock as Darkwa was expected to be cut so he could be placed on the practice squad, but apparently the Dolphins saw enough in Darkwa to warrant giving him a spot on the final roster.

Defensive tackle Kamal Johnson has been placed on injured reserve with a torn meniscus. Johnson was battling with fellow tackles Anthony Johnson and Garrison Smith for a spot on the roster. A. Johnson is expected to make the roster, while Smith's fate has yet to be determined.

Keep up with all the latest news as we continue to monitor the Miami Dolphins roster moves throughout the afternoon.

According to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, the Miami Dolphins have informed third string quarterback Seth Lobato that they plan to release him. However, they also let him know that they plan to put him on the practice squad should he clear waivers.

Lobato was signed and kept in favor of Brock Jensen and was undrafted. He has had a shaky preseason but the Dolphins believe that he is worth developing on the practice squad and perhaps may take over the backup spot next year when Matt Moore's contract expires. This now means that the Dolphins will carry two quarterbacks during the regular season.

Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald has reported that barring any unexpected changes, defensive tackle Anthony Johnson and offensive tackle Jason Fox will make the team.

Johnson has been a surprise this training camp and has done very well in games and practices. Johnson was undrafted out of LSU due to a failed drug test but has seemed to improve and mature since that time. His chances of making the team dramatically increased when AJ Francis was placed on injured reserve several days ago.

Jason Fox was signed in the offseason as depth on the offensive line and did struggle during games. However, his versatility is probably what saved him and he will provide depth throughout the season in various positions.

Breaking News: Hazel, Cone, Kovacs, A. Wilson and Arkin released

Cuts are coming in fast as now Jordan Kovacs, David Arkin, Kevin Cone and Matt Hazel have all found themselves being released by the Miami Dolphins.

Kovacs is a good special teams contributor and can still be developed to be a viable backup, he may find himself on the practice squad as the secondary doesn't have that many players available at this point in time.

Arkin is a guard who did ok, but he never showed any real potential to be anything special, so he became expendable as there's depth on the offensive line in more familiar players such as Sam Brenner, whose fate is also undetermined.

Wide Receiver Kevin Cone was signed from the Atlanta Falcons early in the offseason and made a case later in training camp that he should be considered for a roster spot, even surviving the first round of cuts over surprise release Armon Binns, but with the amazing talent at the wide receiver position, Cone just couldn't pull off a miracle.

As expected, wide receiver Matt Hazel has also been cut from the team, but the Dolphins want to keep him around so they're hoping that the sixth-round draft pick will survive the waiver wire and be signed onto the practice squad.

Linebacker Andrew Wilson has been cut as well, and in my opinion he's a practice squad worthy player. He did well on special teams and always seemed to be around to help make a tackle.

The Dolphins are quickly purging their roster to meet the deadline later this afternoon, there are more bubble players out there and who knows who will be cut next? Keep an eye on all the latest news here.

Rishard Matthews not getting cut; Kevin Cone, Andrew Wilson cut

According to Adam Beasley of the Miami Herald, Rishard Matthews is definitely not getting cut. Coming into the offseason program and training camp, it was reported that Matthews was on a short leash and needed to mature off the field and improve his work ethic.

It appears that Matthews received that message as he had a very strong camp and will be a part of the Miami Dolphins in 2014, unless of course, the Dolphins decide to trade him, which could be a possibility. However, that is all speculation on my part and nothing has been reported on that front.

Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald also reported moments ago that WR Kevin Cone and LB Andrew Wilson have been released. We'll have all the information throughout the remainder of the day on the releases that keep on coming in.

Breaking News: Daniel Thomas and Marcus Thigpen released

8/30/2014

Picture
Written by Luis Sung | Twitter: @FLSportDebater
Per Andrew Abramson, the Miami Dolphins have parted ways with running back Daniel Thomas and RB/WR Marcus Thigpen.

Thomas, a former second-rounder, never managed to live up to his potential thanks to several injuries and poor development. He never showed that he had the vision to run through the tackles and never exhibited enough power to be considered a reliable option in short-yardage situations.

Thigpen had the fan base split, on the one hand there were fans who said that Thigpen was being misused and that he had the ability to be a weapon in this offense. Then there were those who said that Thigpen had never done anything before and he probably wouldn't do anything now.

Thigpen couldn't make his case as a rusher, and with the wide receiver corps as deep as it is, he couldn't earn a spot at that crowded position. His hopes of staying on as a return specialist were dashed by the emergence of rookie receiver Jarvis Landry and fellow receiver Damian Williams, who likely will make the team after a strong preseason.

Stay tuned for more cuts as the Dolphins inch ever closer to their final 53-man roster.

Cuts begin with Kevin Fogg

The first player to be cut today has been revealed. Kevin Fogg, a cornerback, was signed on June 19th, 2014. Fogg struggled to cover receivers and was picked on by opposing quarterbacks, but he had opportunities to try and be a returner, eventually being overcome by Marcus Thigpen, Jarvis Landry and Damian Williams.

During his Pro Day, Fogg ran a 4.49 second 40-yard dash, had a vertical jump of 33-inches, and a broad jump of 10-feet, 4-inches.

With the cutting of Fogg, the team only have four cornerbacks on the team, so they will probably be on the lookout for more corners on the waiver wire, or possibly sign a veteran corner to hold down the fort.

Stay tuned for more cuts throughout the day!

A Fresh Perspective - Written by Luis Sung | Twitter: @FLSportDebater
Several days ago, I was invited to come and join several other Phin Maniacs (see what I did there?) for an evening talking with former All-Pro defensive end and Miami Dolphins legend Jason Taylor, and it was certainly a wonderful time. Taylor regaled us all with stories of his career as a Miami Dolphin, including a few humorous ones about his time under Jimmy Johnson.

"It was intimidating, it was scary, intimidating," Taylor said about playing for Jimmy Johnson. "Jimmy's a psychology major, so he loves to play these mind games with you. He'll talk to you through somebody else, through a message on the board, he finds ways of pushing people's buttons."
