Here are quotes from defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle and offensive coordinator Bill Lazor from Monday’s press conference. These quotes didn’t make it into any of our stories today so here they are and read what they had to say!
Defensive Coordinator Kevin Coyle
(On LB Jelani Jenkins playing every snap and LB Philip Wheeler not)– “Again, it’s determined by the package that we’re in. As the game went on, Chicago came out with a lot of three wide receiver groups, so we were in a lot more substitution defense. We didn’t play as much base defense in this last game as we sometimes do. There were some guys, not just Philip, I think if you look Earl Mitchell’s snaps were down. Certain weeks guys snaps will be very high and the next week it may be lower just based on how the game goes and what personnel we’re defending.”
(On if he and other coaches will talk to DE Dion Jordan about life and have they done that)– “Yeah, we’ll certainly talk to him and I’ll speak with him. I’m very close with Dion as is our entire staff. We’ve had some sit down conversations in the past and we’ll continue to do that, not just with Dion, but all of the players. I think that’s one of the things that we pride ourselves on as coaches here, it’s not just a work relationship with these guys. We try to do the best job we possibly can to give them guidance where we see fit, to mentor them. These are young guys and some of us are old guys, we’ve been around the block a few times. I think some of the things we’ve learned and been around and associated with can help them.”
(On CB Will Davis not getting any defensive snaps and S Michael Thomas getting the start at nickel)– “It doesn’t have anything to do with Will so much as it did with what we were doing in the nickel package with Mike. Mike is one of the better tacklers on our defense. When you see him on special teams and you see some of the things he’s done, and we had a number of different looks that we were prepared to use in the game and it just so happened that Mike was in there on a lot of the early down situations when we had substitution defenses in there and he did a good job.”
Offensive Coordinator Bill Lazor
(On if RB Daniel Thomas is ahead of RB Damien Williams because he is a veteran)– “We hadn’t discussed that anymore today. I think we have a lot of confidence in Damien and I felt watching, he didn’t have real flashy runs from the backfield, but I think we saw him push the pile forward. I thought those were positive plays for us. He also had some positives in the passing game. We threw some balls, got Damien Williams involved. So we’re hoping that we get the ball in his hands, he gets experience and he’ll only get better, which I’m sure he will. I’m excited to see where the guys, it’s a good question, I’m excited to see where that goes.”
(On WR Jarvis Landry’s comments after the game that they could have scored more than they did)– “We’ve got a long way to go before we could reach that kind of thing. To be honest with you, I was very disappointed with a lot of the play yesterday.”
