I can just here the fans’ frustration now,
“But Los, don’t we have a hole at LB to fill?”
The answer is yes. The Dolphins have experimented with multiple lineups during camp. But as a fan you have to applaud the coaching staff for maximizing player production by putting them in positions that cater to their strengths. McCain has work to do in his coverage skills.
“He’s got multiple skills and he’s developing in the areas that we think he needs to improve upon,” said defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle. “His off the ball linebacker play, he just needs a lot of reps, he needs a lot of work and that’s why we’re out here during training camp and he’s getting them.”
A constant that has been preached by coaches this camp has been consistency. This has to be the theme for whole team. Kevin Coyle addressed it with McCain as well,
“The thing that we’ve talked about with Chris in the past has been consistency - following one good day with another good day and so far he’s been able to do that and if he continues that we’re certainly going to find ways to get him involved and he’ll be able to help our defense.”
Yet Coyle is still confident in McCain’s ability to cover,
“He can cover big tight ends. He can run down the field with running backs. So we’re going to find roles for Chris. He’s just got to keep getting better and better every day. His attitude has been really good. I’ve been really pleased with that.”
With the recent emergence of undrafted free agent LB Zach Vigil and second year LB Jordan Tripp the Dolphins seem to have more flexibility at the linebacker position. It’s going to be interesting to see how things shake out. With what promises to be an already lethal pass rush it shouldn’t hurt to have one more talented pass rusher to keep Tom Brady on the turf.

Heading into training camp the starting strong-side linebacker position was all but given to second year player out of Cal Chris McCain. But the Miami Dolphins have plans to use McCain’s strength of rushing the passer on the defensive line as well, rotating him in at defensive end.
