Dolphins’ fans were sent into fourth of July weekend with a bit of disturbing news: second-year defensive end Dion Jordan was suspended for the first four games of the 2014 NFL season for testing positive for performance enhancing drugs. After Dion Jordan’s quiet and uneventful first season with the Dolphins (26 total tackles, 2 sacks), Dolphins fans were looking forward to seeing more of the potential that led to the Dolphins trading up to the #3 pick in last year’s draft to select him out of Oregon. Not only was he entering training camp healthy (unlike last year when he underwent shoulder surgery before training camp), but the Dolphins’ coaches were prepared to make him a more focal point of the defensive scheme.
With all of this information to digest, a lot of words could be used to describe the emotions surrounding release of this news: anger, disappointment, surprise, confusion. And while I’ll be the first to admit that I went through this full spectrum of negative emotions when the news first became public, a new word is summing up my attitude towards this unfortunate situation: opportunity.
