On Sunday, the Miami Dolphins officially announced that Dan Marino had been hired as a Special Advisor to Stephen Ross and Tom Garfinkel. On Monday, Joe Philbin and Mike Wallace reacted to the news and both had nothing but good things to say.
“I’m ecstatic that he’s part of the organization in a formal role,” Philbin said. “I visited with him a little today. He obviously was a great player. I’m sure he’s going to contribute in a lot of different areas and I welcome his addition to the organization.”
“Anytime you have a guy like that just being around the organization, it’s positive,” Wallace said. “He’s a legend. So anytime you can come into the building and see a guy like that around, you know he’s going to give you a couple of tips and nuggets, so that’s always good.”
While Marino's role isn't clearly defined, he is expected to be very active on the business side but will also jump over to the football side from time to time. The hiring is great for the organization and if Marino can prove that he can handle the demands of an NFL job, he may end up working his way to a position where he makes football decisions, much like John Elway in Denver. That though, seems to be several years away.
