As we mentioned yesterday, the Miami Dolphins run game is amongst the best in the league with Lamar Miller tied for second for the most runs of 20+ yards with four. In addition, the Dolphins are fifth in the NFL with 569 yards and are also fifth with 5.0 yards per carry. Joe Philbin spoke as to why it’s been so successful.
“I think the best thing has been we haven’t had a lot of negative plays. I think upfront, we’ve done a good job assignment wise. There hasn’t been a ton of penetration and guys in our backfield making minus-three, minus-four, those types of things. That’s probably the starting point. When we get our back a chance to get his shoulders square at the line of scrimmage, you have a chance to make positive yards.”
Philbin also singled out his tackles – Branden Albert and Ja’Wuan James – as two players who have really taken their game to the next level and who have been a big part of the rushing attack.
“Yeah, they are developing. Branden (Albert) has come in and done well. Obviously, he is a veteran. Ja’Wuan (James) is learning new things each and every week and (it’s) kind of a brave new world in some areas. I think he’s progressing, for sure.”
Many expected the Dolphins to struggle without Knowshon Moreno but instead, they have improved every week and have stepped up to the plate in his absence. Philbin said he isn’t surprised by it.
“When you watch the film, we’ve had some opportunities in the running game. I think both schemes have been good. I think Lamar (Miller) has done some good things. He’s had an opportunity to get into the second level. We’ve gotten him on the perimeter on occasion, and he’s taken advantage of those runs. We’ve had, for early in the season, a fair number of explosive runs. Those things, they all add up.”
Once Moreno gets back, the Dolphins rushing attack will become even more dangerous and hopefully Bill Lazor calls the offense on game day according to its strengths.
