After a lackluster performance by Dallas Thomas in the preseason game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the coaching staff inserted Shelley Smith with the first team at right guard. Despite not having played in that position very much during his NFL career, Smith is confident he can get the job done.
“Right now you never know what’s going to happen,” said Smith. “I’ve been just ready to go wherever I’m needed. We’ll see how everything shakes out, but we’re all just competing and trying to make each other better out here.”
While Daryn Colledge is still slotted in as the first team left guard, Joe Philbin cautioned not to read anything into it and said that the two guard positions are not finalized yet.
“We don’t have a first-team right guard right now,” Philbin said. “It’s going to be an open competition. I don’t know who’s going to start the game against Dallas (on Saturday) at that position. I’m not sure who’s going to start at left guard, either. We’re going to have a good week of practice and we’re going to make a decision and a determination who that’s going to be. Just because that person starts, that may be the starter the next week, he may not. We don’t have clarity at those two positions yet, so we’re going to keep playing. Keep practicing and keep playing.”
In a perfect world, the offensive line would’ve been set before the Dallas Cowboys game on Saturday but unfortunately, that won’t be the case as the team still tries to find the best five players to put on the offensive line for the first week of the regular season.
