Aaron Rodgers is one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL and has the ability to make something happen out of nothing. Just when you think he’s down for a sack, he’ll spin out of it and throw a 40-60 yard touchdown pass to a wide receiver running free. That’s why Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle has been working hard to game plan against Aaron Rodgers.
“There are some guys in this league that are truly special and this quarterback rates up there with the best of them. He’s really amazing to watch. Some guys you’d just love to watch on tape, you just put the tape on and observe. You wish you didn’t have to try to defend him because he’s magical with what he does with the ball and the decision making and the speed that he gets the ball out with, his accuracy, his ability to extend plays, it’s really uncanny, coupled with the fact that he’s got a rifle of an arm. He’s a big challenge and he’s got good weapons around him and they’re very well coached. We’re going to have to be at our best this week to slow those guys down.”
One of the things that has helped Rodgers the past two weeks is that their running game started to produce. Earlier in the season, it was basically non-existent and when you give Eddie Lacy the ball, more bad things can happen for the opposing defense.
“I still think you’d rather try to make them one dimensional. I believe we’ll pose some issues for them just like they pose issues for us. I think our guys rushing the quarterback match up against some of the best guys in the league. Because of that, I think they’ll be tested like we’re going to be tested trying to cover some great receivers and trying to defend a great quarterback. I’d much prefer to be able to slow down their run game and not allow that big back (Eddie Lacy) to get rolling. You saw him the other night, he was running downhill and lowering his shoulder and knocking people around. We can’t allow that to happen. We’ve got to do a great job of gang tackling and making him stop his feet and not get started.”
It sounds like the Dolphins are going to really focus on either stopping the run or pass and make the other beat them. With all of the players who were out coming back on defense, it should provide an extra spark and will make the defense that much stronger.
