It's been a long time in coming, but according to the Sun-Sentinel, the Miami Dolphins are finally finalizing a multi-year deal with Pro Bowl center Mike Pouncey. Pouncey, the Dolphins first-round draft pick from 2011, would be the first player signed to an extension as a first-rounder since Ronnie Brown, who was given an extension when he became a restricted free agent.
Pouncey is considered by many high-ranking officials in the NFL as one of the top centers in the league, and the numbers being thrown around seem to be in the range of $40 million, similar to what his brother Maurkice received with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The numbers may not be what a lot of fans want to hear because of Pouncey's off-year, but what needs to be kept in mind is that Pouncey was playing out of position after he came off of his injury. The last time he had played guard was back in college, and even then he did better than the other option: Dallas Thomas.
Pouncey would go back to his natural position and be teamed up with Branden Albert and Ja'Wuan James as the anchors of the offensive line, and with Billy Turner taking care of the right guard spot, it leaves only one hole on the line, which will likely be filled by the time the season comes around.
The structuring of the deal will be very interesting, and it would likely be done in such a way that the team would have more money to work with this season. This year, the whole structure of the Dolphins could be at stake, so it makes sense that the franchise is doing its very best to build a winning roster. Pouncey would be a big part of hat roster.
