Miami Dolphins select cornerback Bobby McCain in the fifth round

With the ninth pick in the fifth round of the 2015 NFL Draft, the Miami Dolphins have selected cornerback Bobby McCain from Memphis. Here is the scouting report from the PhinManiacs Draft Guide, courtesy of Gabriel Burns (@SoHotItGBurns).

Memphis’s Bobby McCain may not be a physical specimen, but he plays with instincts that cannot be taught. McCain is a day three prospect, but has the potential to develop into a starting slot cornerback down the road.

McCain may not be the biggest name at the biggest school, but he was very productive in his college career. McCain was an excellent playmaker and demonstrated impressive instincts at Memphis. He also has experience on special teams. McCain plays passionately and aggressively. He held his own in run support and is a solid tackler.

McCain is a bit undersized and his game is raw. He needs a lot of work technically that, if successfully improved, could take his game to a new level. He is lacking top notch speed and strength, so specialists at those traits will give him problems. He is not seen as a fit on the outside, so he will have to make a career in the slot.

McCain is a guy that is going to get attention as a potential “gem.” His name has gained popularity recently and teams will be intrigued about his prospects as a slot corner. McCain has natural ability and a higher ceiling than his peers that will also be available in the later rounds.
