After undergoing surgery in late May and not playing in a game since Week 17 of the 2013 season, Mike Pouncey returned to the starting lineup against the Green Bay Packers but not in the same spot he’s occupied since coming to Miami. Instead, he was inserted at right guard, which kept Samson Satele at the center position.
“For his first game, I thought he did it well,” Philbin said. I thought his play speed was good. I thought his energy was good. He had some good finishing blocks. Obviously, it was his first game since maybe December 29th or December 30th. There’s room for improvement, but I thought, overall, it was a good start. We see from there. Right now, our starters, as I like to say, are our starters.”
Bill Lazor, who has never coached Pouncey in a game situation before, said he was looking forward to what kind of intensity he would bring and he said following the game that he wasn’t disappointed in what he saw.
“I thought it was a good first game back for Mike (Pouncey). I think he’s only going to get better. I’m really glad he’s back. When you see the times yesterday where he got fit up, he played low, he got his hands inside, the guy can finish blocks by finishing his blocks by accelerating his feet and keeping his balance. He’s a great athlete who also has power. He can probably do whatever he wants to do up front really. I think he’s that talented a player. I thought he brought great leadership and poise yesterday. It’s only going to get better.”
The Dolphins will likely keep Pouncey at right guard, even though there were times in the game against the Packers where Satele was dominated at the line of scrimmage. We’ll see if it was just a bad game for Satele or if it will become more of a pattern moving forward. If it becomes a pattern, expect Pouncey to shift back over to the center position.
