There has been a lot of chatter since Evan Mathis was released from the Philadelphia Eagles about whether or not he would end up with the Miami Dolphins. While no one knows if there was a clear leader in the race, we do know that Miami is one of four main teams that are interested in signing the Pro Bowl guard.
Mathis was released from the Eagles primarily because he wanted to make more money than the $5.5 million dollars he was scheduled to earn this coming season. Now, it will be up to his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, to find him more money on the open market and presumably, a multi-year contract to go along with it.
“Now it’s wide open and there’s a lot of interest in Evan,” Drew Rosenhaus said on the Joe Rose Show last week. Between now and the start of training camp I definitely expect him to have a new home. I think we’ll be methodical. We won’t necessarily rush into signing immediately. Clearly Evan is one of, if not the top overall free agent right now that would be available in the NFL.”
Rosenhaus has declined to name any of the teams that are interested in Mathis, citing the fact that clubs like to keep it confidential until an official visit occurs. However, John Clayton of ESPN said in a recent question and answer session that there are four main teams looking at Mathis, with Miami being one of them.
"The Broncos aren't among the four main teams looking at Mathis (Indianapolis, Kansas City, Miami and San Francisco)....Mathis -- who's coming off back-to-back Pro Bowls and is considered one of the best guards in football -- is in enough demand that he might be able to pull off a two-year deal even though he's 33."
Out of those four teams, it is likely that it comes down to Indianapolis and Miami. While the Colts are built to win this year, Miami isn't far behind and all the connections between Mathis and Rosenhaus are already in place. We'll see how it all shakes out but it will certainly be something to keep an eye on over the next several weeks.
