According to a report from Rob Rang of CBSSports, the Miami Dolphins are actively exploring a trade up in the first round of the NFL Draft. Their speculated target? Wide receiver Kevin White from West Virginia.
Of course, this is the time of the year where it's hard to really believe anything and if a rumor is coming out several weeks before the draft, you really don't know what to think. In this case, that seems to be the case.
Think about the depth of this year's wide receiver class, think about the third round pick that the Dolphins just traded for wide receiver Kenny Stills, think about all the holes the Dolphins have and then realize the Dolphins only have two picks within the first three rounds. Does it make sense for the team to trade up in the top ten to land White? Not really.
However, you never know how an NFL franchise thinks and operates and with Mike Tannebaum now in the fold, not many people know what to expect. As general manager of the Jets, he wasn't afraid to trade up and grab the player he wanted. Has he learned from that though or does he think that kind of action pays off?
If the Dolphins do end up trading up for White, they are going to get the number one wide receiver in the NFL Draft, at least according to the vast majority of people. According to Jeff Hyde, analyst for the PhinManiacs Draft Guide, White possesses a huge frame, long arms and the quickness to become this year’s best wide receiver. He has huge hands and the ability to go get the ball at its highest point when it’s in the air.
He has a huge catch radius, and good awareness of where he is on the field. He’ll make a bunch of nice sideline catches. He is a guy that can work at any level of the field. He will be production in the screen game, can run the quick routes and uses his big body to win the jump balls. He displays good effort blocking in the run game, but needs to work on his blocking form. He can outrun defenders, but won’t break too many angles if matched up one on one in the open field.
We'll see how it all shakes out but I suspect there will be many more rumors similar to this in the weeks ahead.
