Time for another update on Mathis Watch. Per his agent Drew Rosenhaus - who appeared on WSVN with Steve Shapiro to say this - the free agent Pro Bowl guard will be signing with a team by the end of the week.
The teams being discussed at this point in time are the Miami Dolphins (surprise, surprise), Tennessee Titans, Kansas City Chiefs (which Mathis has come out and denied outright) and the Seattle Seahawks.
In the case of the Seahawks, Mathis recently took a free agent visit there and he came back without a deal, and head coach Pete Carroll tried to downplay the significance of the visit.
"He’s coming for a physical. That’s all,"
Mathis is a 33-year old guard who will turn 34 on November 1st, and he and his people have made it clear that he wants to get one final payday before his career ends. Mathis was set to earn $5.5 million in Philadelphia, and apparently no team has made an offer that gives him anywhere near that much.
If the Dolphins want to sign Mathis, now would definitely be the time, as by now the old guard has to be feeling the pressure since his salary demands are not being met. At this point, he should just want to make sure he latches on somewhere so he at least makes a salary.
Currently, Dallas Thomas is showing significant improvement at left guard, which is where Mathis has played exclusively since 2008. Can Mathis play right guard and allow Thomas to continue his development? Or will Thomas be forced to undo all that growth he's gone through and make a switch all over again? This is assuming the Dolphins sign Mathis at all.
The Dolphins are hoping to roll over their current cap space into 2016 to help them re-sign some players getting ready to head out, such as Olivier Vernon and Lamar Miller. Signing Mathis would make that near impossible, but it would help them win immediately in 2015. So the question remains: Do you want a better chance to win right now? Or do you want to take a chance and give the team a better chance in the future? You decide.
