Scouting report for Miami Dolphins UFA defensive end Ray Drew

Defensive End Ray Drew from Georgia has verbally agreed to join the Miami Dolphins as an undrafted free agent. Here is the scouting report for him from the PhinManiacs Draft Guide, courtesy of Shasky Clarke (@sclarkenfl).

Ray Drew is a great looking prospect with positional versatility. His body type changed dramatically over his career and he never quite played up to the hype of his recruiting attention. 

Drew is a true mismatch against interior offensive linemen due to his combination of length, strength, and athleticism for his size. He was effective at the five-technique in Georgia’s 3-4 scheme, flashing push and penetrating skills over the latter part of his career.

Drew, however, was not consistently productive over the years and is inconsistent getting off blocks. At this stage, he lacks the size and bulk to hold up against double teams and bigger linemen. But he doesn’t have the athleticism to win on the edge either. 

Drew has the ability to positively contribute to an NFL defensive line. The issue is that there doesn’t appear to be an immediately seamless positional fit for him yet. Down the line, he can be a one-gap disruptive 3-4 defensive end or 4-3 three-technique defensive tackle.
