Scouting report for Miami Dolphins UFA linebacker Jeff Luc

Linebacker Jeff Luc from Cincinnati has verbally agreed to join the Miami Dolphins as an undrafted free agent. Here is the scouting report for him from the PhinManiacs Draft Guide, courtesy of Jeff Hyde (@Jeff__Hyde).

Jeff Luc’s size makes him hard to miss, but is somehow flying under the radar on NFL draft boards.  He’s by far the biggest, bulkiest linebacker in this class and has the power and explosiveness to back that up. 

When he gets started, he is impossible to stop as a downhill runner.  He delivers a big pop to blockers and has the ability to shed the block and make the big hit on the ball carrier.  Luc is good at recognizing plays at the snap of the ball which helps hide some of his deficiencies in his speed and quickness. 

Where Luc currently struggles is in pass coverage and running from sideline to sideline in pursuit of a ball carrier.  As of right now, Luc can’t be trusted in passing situations and will likely find himself fitting into a role player role for the first part of his career. 

He will need to shed some weight and work hard to get his quickness and agility up if he wants to prove he can be a three down linebacker in the middle of an NFL defense. 

Overall, I see too much potential to pass up on Luc too many times.  He’ll be on the board on the third day of the draft, but could see a team reaching for his potential in the fourth or fifth round.  I think Luc is young enough and athletic enough to drop some weight and improve in his areas of weakness.
