After watching Dallas Thomas struggle against Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive tackle Gerald McCoy, head coach Joe Philbin saw it fit to give guard Shelley Smith some reps as the first-team right guard today in practice.
Dallas Thomas had been given first-team reps all throughout training camp, but now Smith is getting a look in hopes that he'll be able to shore up the run blocking for the team. Offensive line coach John Benton had high praise for Smith when he played for the Houston Texans and considers him a very efficient run blocker but has weaknesses as a pass protector. Hopefully Smith can help fix the run game with his affinity towards run blocking.
Dallas Thomas will have a lot of work to do to make up for his bad performance against the Buccaneers, and hopefully John Benton will be able to work with him while Smith holds down the fort.
