![]() Written by Matthew Cannata | Twitter: @PhinManiacs The status surrounding Caleb Sturgis seems to be a mystery as no one knows which way the front office and coaching staff is leaning. On one hand, Sturgis was a fifth round pick and a team would hate to give up on someone so quickly. On the other hand, he was a pick of former general manager Jeff Ireland and the current front office has no ties or loyalty to Sturgis. If Sturgis was healthy, this probably wouldn't be a conversation right now but since he's battling the same groin injury he battled last year, his status is up in the air. When asked about Sturgis following the game against the St. Louis Rams, Philbin danced around the question a bit and wasn't particularly clear as to what direction the team was thinking of going in. “Obviously he got a bunch of kicks in warm ups. He looked good. His leg looked good. He missed the long one – what was it, 53 yards or something like that – it came off his foot pretty well. I mean, I thought he looked good tonight. That’s all I really have to go on.” Final cuts are due today by 4:00 PM EST so perhaps we'll have an answer by then. However, it's still possible Dennis Hickey combs the waiver wire for someone else to replace Sturgis. One possible name is Connor Barth, who was released by Tampa Bay. Hickey is familiar with him as he previously worked in the Buccaneers front office.
