Tennessee Titans select Marcus Mariota with the second overall pick

The Tennessee Titans have selected quarterback Marcus Mariota from Oregon. Here is his scouting report, courtesy of Justin Capriotti (@JCapSports):

Marcus Mariota has all the makings of being the face of an NFL franchise, but he’ll enter the league upon a steep learning curve. The success rate of quarterbacks from systems like the one Oregon runs is low in the NFL, but I believe Mariota will be an exception to this.

His improvement as a pocket passer from his freshman to junior year is noteworthy, but there is still progress to be made. Mariota’s arm strength will do just fine at the NFL level, but it is by no means elite. There are games in which he appears to be a very accurate passer, but others where throws will consistently sail on him. I believe this could be credited to his inconsistent base and lower body follow through.

Mariota has a very good understanding of the pass rush and has shown the ability to escape free rushers and extend plays. One would like to see Mariota make more window throws and lead his receivers, but he plays within the confines of the Oregon system well.

The one trait that allows Mariota to stand out is his functional mobility. When he’s forced off his spot, he displays the ability to keep plays alive and continue to be a smooth operator of the offense.

Mariota has all the potential to be a top 10-12 QB in the NFL with the proper coaching and supporting cast.
