Less than an hour after making his signing with the Miami Dolphins official, Ndamukong Suh was introduced to South Florida and the rest of the nation. The press conference was filled with members of the media and also included all levels of Dolphins management, including owner Stephen Ross, Vice-President of Football Operations Mike Tannebaum and General Manager Dennis Hickey. Others, including head coach Joe Philbin, sat in the front row throughout the introductions and remarks.
Ross kicked off the press conference and talked about how excited they are to add a five time All-Pro in the middle of his prime. Ross noted that this is probably one of the great free agent signings not only this year, but also on a historical level. Ross talked about how great of a person he is off the field in addition of how great of a player he is on the field. Ross pointed out that Suh gave over $2 million dollars to the University of Nebraska after he graduated from there.
Ross said he got many e-mails from people such as Jalen Rose, who said that the Dolphins were getting a great player but an even better person. He also said that Warren Buffet called and said the Dolphins were getting a great player. Ross said the deal was finalized on Wednesday morning and thanked the brain-trust of the Dolphins organization.
Tannebaum thanked Ross for the incredible resources that he gave the front office to work with. Tannebaum said that the Dolphins organization is working to becoming a world class organization. He noted that to get a player of Suh's stature, it means a lot that he chose the Dolphins, especially with all the other teams interested. Tannebaum thanked Suh's agent, Jimmy Sexton along with Dawn Aponte, Dennis Hickey and others. Tannebaum also talked about Suh off the field as well, calling him a great person.
General Manager Dennis Hickey talked about how they collectively worked together to get the deal done. Hickey rattled off the scout's names in the department and said they have all been working hard to identify the needs of the team and to make it better with the moves they are making in free agency and later in the draft.
Hickey said he went back to his pre-draft notes from years ago when Suh was entering the league and was reminded just how good he is. He noted that after meeting with his family today, he understood why he's such a good person. Hickey said that when going against the Lions in the past, the entire game plan was altered because of his presence on the defensive line.
It was finally Suh's turn to speak, who called today a great day while noting there's many more to come in the future. Suh thanked the fans and the Lions organization back in Detroit and said he will always keep those memories with him. Suh said that he, along with his family, spent a lot of time researching Florida and the Dolphins. He understands that there is a lot of hard work to do but he feels good about where the organization is headed and is excited to be a part of the organization.
It was then time to answer questions from the media. Here are his responses to the questions that were asked.
Ross and Tannebaum also took questions from the media. Here are their responses
