The Dolphins faced the Carolina Panthers in a preseason tonight after a few days of scrimmages with them. This is the second preseason game and we are starting to really see some players solidify their role with the team and other players that are starting to see their chances fade. Here are some quick winners and losers to take away from tonight.
Damien Williams – Despite having a very close call for a touchback rather than a touchdown, Williams ran with speed, power and had a touchdown catch from Tannehill, as well as running the ball 4 times for 14 yards and a touchdown. He has locked down the #2 running back in my opinion.
Rishard Matthews – His outstanding camp continues as he converted a tough first down against the first team defense of the Panthers. He has clearly locked down being the fifth wide receiver and has given Miami the luxury to bring rookie DeVante Parker along slowly.
LaMichael James – Had a nice punt return and a couple of nice runs out of the backfield. James has all but locked down being the #3 running back on the team after putting together a good performance tonight and rookie Jay Ajayi dealing with hamstring issues.
Matt Hazel – He made several catches including catching a touchdown pass from backup QB Matt Moore. I believe he is the sixth best WR on the team. Now can Miami figure out a way to fit him on the roster?
Ryan Tannehill/Jarvis Landry/Lamer Miller – All three players look ready for the regular season and they tore the Panthers apart.
Dallas Thomas – He had a beautiful slide over to help Jason Fox and protect Tannehill from getting sacked. The much criticized player has quietly been performing well this offseason. In fact the offensive tackle depth is suddenly more concerning than our guard play.
A.J. Francis – Again was making some plays against the backup units. He appears to be making a move to be the fourth DT over C.J. Mosley and Anthony Johnson. It is still a close battle but he helped himself again this game.
Will Davis – In 4 plays in the late 3rd quarter he gave up two completions, a pass interference call and missed a tackle against the 3rd string QB.
Matt Moore – For the second game in a row, Matt Moore struggled when he came into the game. He ended up throwing an interception late in the first half to top it off. He did lead a drive, mainly through connecting with Matt Hazel, in the 3rd quarter for a touchdown. I am starting to hear some grumbling about Matt Moore being overpaid as the backup based on his performance.
Jason Fox – Struggled on several plays against the Panthers starting unit before leaving with a possible concussion. Suddenly, the biggest concern on the team is the depth of the offensive tackle position.
Kelvin Sheppard – The Panthers were stopped largely due to inaccurate passes and mistakes. When Newton was “in the zone”, he exploited the limited speed of Sheppard. What do you think Tom Brady will do to him? Linebacker depth has clearly emerged as another serious issue for the Dolphins.
Cedric Thompson - With Louis Delmas lost for the season it opens the door for a Dolphins to keep another safety. Thompson had a poor showing against the 3rd team of Carolina. He was beat for an easy touchdown then missed a tackle for a two point conversion. He then missed another tackle on the next series.
