After releasing a generic team statement on Monday morning, Joe Philbin opened up a bit more in regards to Derrick Shelby and his current situation. Shelby has been accused of touching women without permission at a Fort Lauderdale night club and the police report said that he was resisting arrest and not cooperating.
In fact, the report said that police had to taser him three times to subdue him and get him out of the club. Philbin, who we all know is a no-nonsense type guy, said that it’s important for everyone to represent the Miami Dolphins in a positive manner.
“I think you heard me say often times that it’s important for everybody that represents the Miami Dolphins, players, staff members, to represent the organization the right way on and off the field. I released a statement earlier today in regard to Derrick Shelby. Obviously, it happened over the weekend. We are still gathering information, but I feel like from the information that I have at the present time that I took the appropriate action and suspended him indefinitely. I think you have the statement. There’s really not much more to say beyond that.”
One of the biggest worries of the front office and coaching staff is that players will get into trouble during the offseason and/or the bye weekend. That’s exactly what happened here and Philbin didn’t sound happy, especially because they talked about it on Wednesday before they left.
“It’s important, like I’ve said many times and I’ll say it again, everything we do impacts one another. It’s important our guys do the right things. That was the message on Wednesday when we left.”
While all of the details haven’t been released to the public, the Dolphins have an excellent security staff and have no doubt compiled much more information than we know. That’s why Philbin decided to suspend him indefinitely until the case is resolved.
“I based my decision on the information I have. I don’t have everything yet. There’s certainly still more things for us to look into and conversations to have. We looked at the situation in its totality and made a decision.”
