It's no secret that the Miami Dolphins have a lot of depth at the wide receiver position and it's no secret that they are going to have a tough time deciding who to keep and who to cut. The players realize this too and recently spoke out about it after practice the other day.
“Depth-wise, absolutely,” said Brian Hartline. “We’re able to have guys jump in and jump out and hopefully not miss a beat. We have a great competition going on in the wide receiver room. Guys know that. They should know that. Competition breeds better play. To me, it’s a good situation.”
Marcus Thigpen, who was converted to wide receiver in the offseason and is now on the roster bubble, had this to say:
“It’s a lot of guys in there,” he said. “It’s major competition. I’m just trying to do as best I can with the role that I’m given right now. It’s a tough battle, but I’m going to keep fighting. It’ll definitely make us better. You see the young guys come in and just as good as the older guys. (I’m) just watching everybody and just picking up some things from them because it’s new to me. But just watching those guys, us pushing each other is definitely going to make us better.”
One player that has grabbed the attention of fans, coaches and media is rookie Jarvis Landry. Hartline believes that he is already playing like a veteran in the NFL.
“The fact is he’s very diverse, he’s very well coached,” Hartline said. “His intellect is like a third-year player, which is expected. It’s the NFL, you’re supposed to communicate at a high level, and he does. He executes as a high level. To have him as part of our group, he definitely makes the group stronger.”
The Dolphins may end up keeping six or seven receivers this year and if they do, it will result in cuts in other positions. Let's hope that the position sorts itself out during preseason and the decision becomes a bit easier to make because let's face it - there's no way the Dolphins can keep all of these guys and it would be hard to see the team release good talent.
